I did some more digging. Apparently IE8 beta 2 in Standards Mode is not capable of dynamically creating VML content. See this bug report. The good news: MS seems to work on the problem ...

Apparently there have been loads of changes to the namespace handling of Internet Explorer 8. As of beta 2 this still breaks VML support. I'll wait for the RC until I start working on a fix... Do you know any VML based web page that works with the current beta 2?
